Oily Scalp
Greasy hair occurs when the scalp produces more sebum (natural oil) than is needed. Sebum helps protect and moisturize the scalp and hair, but excessive production can make the hair look oily, flat, heavy and dirty shortly after washing.
Signs of an Oily Scalp - hair becomes greasy quickly; luck of volume; oily flakes or dandruff; scalp odor; scalp may itch.
Excess sebum creates an ideal environment for yeast-like fungus Malassezia, which naturally lives on the scalp and feeds on scalp oils. When it overgrows, it may contribute to: scalp inflammation; dandruff and flaking; itching and irritation; conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis; hair sheddings.
Keeping sebum production balanced and maintaining a healthy scalp microbiome are important steps in preventing these issues and supporting overall scalp health.
